The town of Rochefort is approximately 35km from the campsite.
This Charente Maritime town between La Rochelle, Royan and Ile d'Oléron blossomed after Colbert established a military port here in 1966: it hasn’t lost any of its personality and monuments. Visit the ancient ramparts, 17th century Corderie Royale (fascinating group of rope-making buildings almost 400m in lenth), trading ports, marinas and more. The town of Rochefort was recently in the news as a group of enthusiasts rebuilt the Hermione warship here in the former dockyard.
Be sure to visit Fouras Les Bains sea resort a dozen kilometres north west of Rochefort at the northern mouth of the Charente River opposite Ile de Ré, Ile d'Oléron, Ile d'Aix and Ile de Madame;
Around 10km south of Rochefort at the southern mouth of the Charente River, you’ll find the magical village of Port Des Barques which is famous for being a real fishing village and departure point where Lafayette set sail on the Hermione.
